Ei Study updates: PM Lee Hsien Loong Opens Glocal Connect Village at Temasek Polytechnic "Where the world comes to TP and TP goes to the world"
Press Release

Glocal Connect Village (GCV) at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) is a one-of-a-kind, iconic representation of the poly’s internationalisation strategy. Apart from being a vibrant learning space for local and international staff and students, GCV will also be a platform for these groups, local budding artists and the community to immerse in and showcase cultural diversity through artistic talent. TP is confident that this meaningful and significant engagement with individuals from diverse backgrounds will increase every student’s cultural awareness and sensitivity.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will launch this unique facility on Friday, 23 November 2012, at 3pm at the West Gate entrance of the polytechnic.

Press Release Date: 20 Nov 12

GCV had its beginnings in 2005 when TP embarked on a transnational journey by setting up a Centre for TransCultural Studies in order to prepare students for a connected world. The Centre was structured to highlight the three pillars of Arts & Culture, Culture & Language, and Earth Stewardship. Cross Disciplinary Subjects such as Global Citizenship and World Issues were also developed to encourage students to be future-oriented and connected to the world.

“If Singapore’s youth are not trained to harness globalisation, our nation will lose out. So while we at TP try hard to send as many of our students abroad on study and community trips, as well as internships, we have also tried to extend the global experience to all students by bringing the world to TP”, said Mr Boo Kheng Hua, Principal & CEO, Temasek Polytechnic.

GCV will house art studios, performance & exhibition spaces, a pottery studio, language labs, activity rooms, corporate training rooms as well as TP’s Centre for TransCultural Studies which runs the Transnational Studies subject which enables students to acquire cross-cultural skills and knowledge targeted at preparing them for life in the globalised workplace. Students will complete a two-week residential stay at the GCV which allows them to live, play and study together. This GCV experience will provide unique opportunities for international and local students to interact and be engaged in a range of intercultural learning experiences together.

TP has been fortunate to have received significant contributions and support from our industry partners towards the poly’s internationalisation strategy. An example of this is the setting up of the Global Education Fund for overseas internships and exchanges. Luxury fashion retailer, Club 21, is the first contributor towards this fund.

The launch of TP’s Glocal Connect Village will be witnessed by Ambassadors, representatives from TP’s Board of Governors and industry partners.
