Jonah Zankl and Xiongyi Cui receive four-year Schulich Leader Scholarships to study at the University of CalgaryTwo future University of Calgary students, Jonah Zankl and Xiongyi Cui, are among a group of 40 talented Canadian high school students who will receive prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarships.

As Schulich Leaders, Zankl and Cui will each receive four-year scholarships worth $60,000 to study at the University of Calgary. The program recognizes students who present outstanding community, business or entrepreneurial leadership, as well as academic excellence, and are enrolled in a ‘STEM’ program — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — during their undergraduate years of study.

Zankl attended Strathmore High School, and has been admitted to the University of Calgary this fall to a joint science/arts program majoring in applied math and economics. Zankl is interested in the world of finance and its connection to economics and would like to explore this in more detail as he moves through his degree.

Zankl was heavily involved in his home community of Strathmore and plans to continue his involvement while attending university. His resume of community work includes organizing the Strathmore Assembly of Youth, a program that gives young people the opportunity to provide input on municipal affairs through a mayor/youth council. Zankl also organized and participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer in Strathmore.

Incoming engineering student Xiongyi Cui attended Prince of Wales Collegiate in St John’s, Nfld., and has been admitted to the Schulich School of Engineering for fall 2013. After finishing his undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary, Cui plans to pursue a master’s in aerospace engineering where he would like to research different aspects of space travel.

Cui’s list of community involvement in his hometown is extensive. On weekends, he devoted his time to tutor international students, and through his work with the Tutoring for Tuition program, he worked with his fellow classmates and peers to help them reach their potential. He also worked in an after-school program and is an assistant Tae Kwon Do instructor.

“It’s wonderful that these two future University of Calgary students were recognized by the Schulich Leader Scholarship program for their very remarkable accomplishments in their academics and in their communities,” said Susan Barker, vice- provost (student experience).

“The University of Calgary prides itself on our connection and integration to the greater Calgary community, our focus on research and teaching excellence, and our commitment to providing students with skills and opportunities that ensures their development into the next generation of outstanding leaders and citizens. We are confident that these two outstanding individuals will achieve their full potential.”

The Schulich Leader Scholarship program is the brainchild of Canadian business leader and philanthropist Seymour Schulich. These prestigious national awards were established in 2012 to support and encourage outstanding young Canadians to embrace STEM disciplines in their future careers. Schulich’s dream is to ensure that future Canadian leaders are among the next pioneers of global scientific research and innovation.
