The State University of New York at Stone Brook, usually known as Stony Brook University, is a public research university located in Stony Brook, NY. Stony Brook’s main campus is home to more than 24,500 students and ranked in the top 100 public national universities by U.S. News and World Report. 98% of instructional faculty hold doctoral degrees or highest degrees in their fields. 
Stony Brook was one of ten national universities awarded a National Science Foundation recognition award in 1998 for their integration of research and education. In 2001 it became a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an invitation-only organization of the top research universities in the U.S., currently having 62 members. In the last three years two Nobel Prizes were awarded to professors for their work conducted at Stony Brook. The University has an annual $4.65 billion economic impact on the region. Stony Brook co-manages Brookhaven National Laboratory through Brookhaven Science Associates, a 50-50 partnership with Battelle Memorial Institute. Stony Brook is also one of two public schools in New York to have a medical school and a dental school, the other being University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.
Stony Brook’s reach extends from its 1,039-acre (420,5ha) campus on Long Island’s North Shore – encompassing the main academic areas, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex, a performing arts center, Stony Brook University Medical Center (Suffolk County’s only tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and the only academic medical center in Suffolk County—larger also than any in Nassau County), the Health Sciences Center, and the Veterans Home – to Stony Brook Manhattan, a new Research and Development Park, three business incubators including one at Calverton, New York, and the Stony Brook Southampton campus on Long Island’s East End. Stony Brook also co-manages Brookhaven National Laboratory, joining Princeton, the University of Chicago, Stanford, and the University of California as the only major institutions involved in a research collaboration with a national lab.

There are more than 66 undergraduate major programs, 102 Master’s programs, 40 doctoral programs and 32 graduate certificate programs in virually all areas of interest including Engineering, Applied Sciences, Journalism, Business Management, Music and English.
