SUNY Buffalo State is a public university in Buffalo, New York, United States, and is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Buffalo State was founded in 1871 as the Buffalo Normal School for the training of teachers. Located on a 125-acre campus in the heart of Buffalo’s cultural corridor, SUNY Buffalo State now offers a wide array of academic programs, including 169 undergraduate programs with 11 honors options, 19 postbaccalaureate teacher certification programs, and 66 graduate programs.
Buffalo State is known for its distinctive curriculum, hands-on learning opportunities, diverse and creative learning environment, and location in one of Buffalo’s most vibrant cultural districts. A Carnegie Master’s I institution, Buffalo State is accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is one of the most affordable institutes of higher education in New York State.
Buffalo State College stands out from other SUNY schools with its large variety of about 160 undergraduate programs. Students have more than 40 clubs and organizations to consider joining, as well as more than 20 fraternities and sororities. The Buffalo State Bengals compete in the NCAA Division III State University of New York Athletic Conference, though the Bengals football team is a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Since Buffalo State is largely considered a commuter school, it offers a Commuter Assistance Program (CAP) to help local freshmen transition into college life without living on campus. For graduate students, Buffalo State has a Department of Speech-Language Pathology, among other academic departments. Notable alumni of Buffalo State College include Stan Szymanski, senior vice president of digital production at Sony Pictures Imageworks, and author David Lazerson.
