About
The State University of New York at Binghamton, also known as Binghamton University, (commonly referred to as Bing or BU), is a public research university in the U.S. state of New York. The university is one of the four university centers in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Since its establishment in 1946, the University has grown from a small liberal arts college, Harpur College, to a large doctoral-granting institution, presently consisting of six colleges and schools, and is now home to nearly 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Binghamton University is currently ranked 90th among the 262 national universities ranked in the 2012 U.S. News America's Best Colleges and Universities ranking and has been called a "Public Ivy" . The Carnegie Foundation has classified the University as RU/H (Research Universities with high research activity). The university's main campus is located in the Town of Vestal, with a secondary education center located in the nearby downtown Binghamton.
The campus is spread across 930 acres on a wooded hillside above the Susquehanna River in the Binghamton suburb of Vestal.
The University received top recognition in The Princeton Review's second annual "green rating" of colleges -- one of only 15 colleges honored.
The on-campus Nature Preserve boasts 190 acres of protected forest and wetlands with hiking/biking/running trails and a six-acre pond.
Downtown Binghamton offers a world-class opera company, a symphony orchestra, movie theaters, clubs, incredible restaurants, bars and professional hockey and baseball teams.
Binghamton’s School of Management is rated 12th among public business schools in the nation by Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which also gave the school an A+ for job placement and an A for teaching quality.
Our faculty includes a Pulitzer Prize winner, a National Book Award winner and numerous Fulbright, Ford and Guggenheim scholars.
Two teams of Watson School computer science students took first-place honors in the National Federal Aviation Administration Design Competition for Universities -- one for its plan that uses geothermal heat to remove snow and ice from runways and the other for offering ways to recycle de-icing fluids.
