  KAPA HAKA PERFORMANCE

On Friday the 4th April our Kapa Haka Group performed at Freyberg Community School and Henderson Intermediate. At Freyberg the group was welcomed by their tutor, the Teacher In Charge of Kapa Haka and the Principal. Students at Freyberg are preparing to perform at the up andcoming Corban‟s Estate Festival. It was great to see our students interact so well with them and forge very good relationships with these little ones. Following this we went to Henderson Intermediate where students performed a very slick performance which was supported with a spirited tautoko from the Henderson Intermediate School Bi-Lingual Unit.

Freyberg Community school pupils sing their waiata of thanks for the visit from Waitakere College Kapa Haka.

  ENVIRONMENT COUNCIL TRIP

On Friday the 4th April Mrs Catchpole took two Year12 students, Jasmine Tuia and Joanne Lamositele, from the Environment Council to the Green Jam at the TAPAC Campus in Western Springs. The girls attended 2 workshops each around recycling, Travelwise and current environmental issues, in particular the area of Climate Change. They also attended a talk about how to start a movement to make a change.

\

The tour of Western Springs College campus to check out their gardens, recycling centre and worm farm was a highlight. In the afternoon the girls ran a workshop to start planning the West Mini-Jam which Waitakere College is hosting in July. The Green Jam was very inspirational and we have come back with some good ideas on how to try and implement sustainable and environmental ideals into our school environment.

YEAR 13 BIOLOGY TRIP TO TIRITIRI MATANGI

It began on the chilly autumn morning of March 28th, with 32 young aspiring Level 3 biologists eagerly aboard a ferry out of Auckland Harbour. Our destination? Tiritiri Matangi: an open island sanctuary that is home to rare endemic flora and fauna. Our aim? To observe speciation and evolution outside of our classroom habitat.

\

After splitting into four groups, we embarked on a 2-hour tour of the island. We got up close and personal with fearless fantails and North Island robins on its search for food. We watched as little stitchbirds and bellbirds tottered through the small doorways of sugar feeder cages, while a plump Tui watched on in jealousy. We felt the soft kind leaves of the kanuka, compared to its rough mean sibling – the manuka, which flowers at a different time. We even met the Bushman‟s Friend, which is a useful plant to have around when toilet paper is in short supply…

Our day ended with a session on the biological and geographical history behind the wildlife species we saw that day and how they developedfrom their environment. A heart-felt “THANK YOU” must go to Mrs Percy, Mrs Coup, Mr Bennett and our volunteer guides from the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi for their time and enthusiasm in making this trip what it was: absolutely AWESOME. Oh and of course, it will help tremendously with our exam!
