Prime Minister visits Avondale College

"You will always take your education with you," was John Key's message for our Year 13 students at a special assembly on Friday in which he encouraged them to go on to tertiary study:  "In modern New Zealand you need extended levels in education."

In his 45 minute visit the Prime Minister shared anecdotes from his own life, as well as lessons he has learned along the way, before opening up the floor to questions from students.

He made the point that you get out of life what you put into it, and that attidude - not ability - is primarily the determining factor of success.  He encouraged our students not to worry about making mistakes, but to recognise that this is part of learning, and noted the importance of making sensible choices around the issues of smoking and drinking. Finally he addressed the issue of youth mental health, pointing out that one in five teenagers will experience some form of mental health issue - from mild depression to thoughts about suicide  -  and when and if these issues arise, highlighted the importance of talking with a trusted counsellor, parent, teacher or friend.

In answering questions from the floor, the Prime Minister addressed topics as varied as his philosophy on life (positive), to racism within the job market (undoubtedly there in pockets, but improving as our society becomes more multicultural), the reasons behind school donations (the government can't give schools enough money to fund all the activities), and, finally, how to get his job - which brings us back to education...
The Prime Minister spent some time chatting with the Head and Deputy Head Prefects after the assembly, and seemed to enjoy his time at Avondale College.
