WHILE other students are shivering through the Melbourne winter in June, rising tennis star Codey Gunn will be playing for Australia in Italy.

The 11-year-old Narre Warren resident was selected in the three-player Australian side this month after achieving a high ranking and performing well in local tournaments.

He will spend the better part of a month playing in Tennis Australia’s European Clay Court Tour against other leading under-age players.Gunn is in grade 6 at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North. The son of Fountain Gate tennis coach Greg Gunn, he said the prospect of going to Italy, following a trip to play in France last year, was “pretty cool”.

“It was a bit of a surprise,” Codey Gunn said. “I knew it was possible but I didn’t really think it would happen. Dad knew before I did because he got the letter in an email.”Gunn has been playing tennis since he was four years old and will spend the month playing and training in Italy while also spending time on schoolwork each day.He trains at Fountain Gate tennis club every day and the only thing he isn’t looking forward to is spending such a long time away away from his family.“Dad is a tennis coach, so I played with him a bit and from there I got a bit serious about it.”

Gunn is a right-handed player who favours his forehand and likes to play from the baseline. His favourite player is Serbian star Novak Djokovic.“My aims while over there are to play good of course and do my best. One day I’d love to play on the world circuit.”
