Dairy farmers never die and they don’t even go out to pasture. Fortunately for the students of Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North, ex-dairy farmer Gerry Cunningham, has turned his talents to bush poetry. Cunningham, from Tynong North, visited the school recently surprising students during lunch with stories of drovers and bullockies. The visit was to launch the Mobile Discovery Centre, taking books and the love of reading to students in the playground.
“We wanted to promote the National Year of Reading in a fun and innovative way,” says Michelle Nye, Discovery Centre Director, “so we thought we would take the more popular titles into the playground where students can browse at their leisure whilst listening to tales of the bush.”
“It was a great opportunity to reach out to students and highlight the importance of reading for at least 10 minutes a day. As leaders in education we must always be working to craft new opportunities for reading and learning.
The school intends to run more activities celebration this year’s National Year of Reading.
