On June 20th the Waitakere College ISC had two soccer teams participate in the annual Auckland tournament held at the Waitakere Trust Stadium.

The theme this year was that each school choose a country which will participate in the 2014 Soccer World Cup being held in Brazil. The ISC teams from Waitakere chose Japan as their representative team. The teams were called “Go Waitakere “Ichi” (Japanese for 1) Jeremy, Mark, Michael, Mikayla, Winston and Ashwant and team “Ni” (Japanese for 2), Matthew, Leah,Hine- Mei, Thomas, Chathura, Ruka and Grace. The uniforms were white tee shirts and white headbands with a Red Dot in the middle.

During the opening ceremony and the reading of the Special Olympics oath “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”, the Waitakere teams carried in their Japanese and Waitakere College ISC unit banners which were kindly manufactured and donated by Mr Morton from TCC Solutions.

The tournament had 29 teams from many Auckland schools. These teams were placed into separate divisions based on their soccer skills and abilities. The teams each played 4 games and at the end of the day the teams were graded by the total amount of goals for and against them.

Both Waitakere teams played extremely well and with their Japanese uniform looked very impressive. By the end of the tournament Team “Ichi” came 2nd in second division grade and team “Ni” coming 5th in the fourth division. We all felt we had played our best and would be back next year to try and do better. The Waitakere teams could not have achieved such good results if they did not have a great support team. Many thanks to Kathy, Jolien, Beth, Joseph, Wayne and supporters from the Waitakere College ISC unit.On the day, one of our Waitakere College support team members Mr Joseph Setefano, was recognised by the tournament directors fordisplaying unselfish attitude and positive behaviour during the games, for his teams, including their opposition players, side-line officials and referees. When Joseph received this compliment he replied that tournaments such as this were for all the kids and they needed encouragement and praise for participating... Well done Joe.

At the end of the day all our Waitakere soccer students returned to school with huge smiles on their faces, tired, but already talking about the next tournament in 2014.. “GO WAITAKERE COLLEGE”. Special thanks to Mel from Special Olympics New Zealand for a wonderful tournament.
