Alex, 19, who is studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design, will use the D&AD recognition to enhance his employability prospects and demonstrate to companies what he is capable of.Founded in 1962, D&AD is an educational charity which exists to promote excellence in design and advertising. Its annual awards see an impressive range of distinguished brands, such as Channel 4, Nissan, Ted Baker and the BBC, provide briefs for the completion of a range of specialist tasks.
Alex won his prize in the ‘Moving Image’ category in which he was tasked with creating a brand new motion graphic for Channel 4’s channel 4seven – a destination for the most popular and talked about shows from the last seven days. His motion graphic is a series of intertwining graphics that represent particular programme genres and the movement is to signify people’s opinions and discussions.
Reflecting on his success Alex said: “The idea for the piece revolved around 4seven’s content being generated by the buzz of what people are talking about.“I was shocked, but delighted to find out I had won the award. In the future I hope to work in branding and advertising and the recognition from D&AD fits perfectly with that.“It is also really nice to be able to carry on the success of Teesside University. I have learnt so much during my time at Teesside and this is a way of me being able to give something back.”
Jo Hamill, Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design in Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media, said: “The D&AD Student Awards are the pinnacle of recognition within Graphic Design and they are highly valued, not only in this country, but internationally.“It is the third successive year where one of our students has won a prize and it really is a great achievement.“Alex’s win is incredible given that he is a second year student and to receive recognition of this nature is a true reflection of the talent, dedication and enthusiasm he has shown since arriving at Teesside University.”
