The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is conducted by researchers at the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (CWCU). CWCU has been focusing on the study of world-class universities for many years, published the first Chinese-language book titled world-class universities and co-published the first English book titled world-class universities with European Centre for Higher Education of UNESCO. CWCU initiated the "First International Conference on World-Class Universities" (WCU-1) in 2005 and organizes the conference every second year, which attracts a large number of participants from all major countries. CWCU endeavors to build databases of major research universities in the world and clearinghouse of literature on world-class universities, and provide consultation for governments and universities.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is published and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is a fully independent organization on higher education information and not legally subordinated to any universities or government agencies.
In 2012, some 430 universities reported their data on students, academic staff and resources. The participating universities cover 61% of the Top 100 universities and 50% of other Top 500 universities on the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012; therefore they formed a representative sample set to describe and reflect the characteristics of world leading research universities. GRUP 2012 also includes those data for 1,200 universities that were used to calculate the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, Highly Cited Researchers, papers in Nature and Science and SCIE/SSCI papers
