Candidates' applications to sit the examination are accepted on the condition that they adhere to all the regulations governing the examination as spelt out in the Instructions Booklet. School candidates will receive a copy of the Instructions Booklet 'Instructions for School Candidates taking Singapore-Cambridge GCE N(T), N(A), and/or O-Level Examinations' from their respective schools. Private candidates should refer to the http://en.eistudy.com of the Instructions for Private Candidates taking Singapore-Cambridge GCE N(T), N(A), O and/or A-Level Examination'.

Mother Tongue B. Mother Tongue B is not an O-Level subject but candidates who pass will be deemed to have met the Mother Tongue requirement for admission to JC. Performance in Chinese B (1163) / Malay B (1134) / Tamil B (1143) is indicated as Merit, Pass or Ungraded. The grade will not be included in the computation of O-Level aggregate score.

OSIE. In 2005, the Ministry of Education (MOE) introduced greater flexibility in the curriculum by giving secondary schools the option to offer O-Level School Initiated Electives (OSIE) to build up their niche areas. OSIE subjects are taken in addition to, or as replacement of, current curriculum offerings by the MOE. They are examinable and the grades can be used in the computation of O-Level aggregate score for admission to the Junior Colleges/Centralised Institute and Polytechnics. Schools should only register their students for examination in those OSIE subjects that have been approved by the Curriculum Planning and Development Division for their schools.

Applied Subjects. From 2008, Applied Subjects are developed by the polytechnics in partnership with the secondary schools to better cater to the interests and aspirations of students who are keen to progress along an applied and practice-oriented path of education. They are examinable by the polytechnics and the grades can be used in the computation of O-Level aggregate score for admission to the Junior Colleges/Centralised Institute and Polytechnics. Schools should only register their students for examination in those Applied Subjects that have been approved by the Curriculum Planning and Development Division for their schools.
